MARSHALL'S
INSTRUCTIONS:
If you think that you can just hop on to a couple of hundred bikes and
ride down the road, then your wrong! When the convoy starts form its
home base, it doesn't stop until it reaches its destination, not even
for traffic lights junctions or roundabouts! Police permission is required
for the route and each obstacle has to be counted and checked for problems
for the convoy, marshals and the police. After all that the route has
to be agreed with the police who may have their own ideas on how the
convoy should move. Negotiations can take months, especially when the
convoy may cross as many as 4 different police authorities. There have
been times when we have thought that the Jumbo run would just not happen
but Pete has managed to co-ordinate the route with the police every
time.
Solo
riders, in conjunction with the police, marshal each junction and obstacle
on the route. This has taken as many as 400 solo riders. The route is
broken up into sections with sector marshals coordinating groups of
solo riders. When the convoy passes, each section tags onto the end
of the convoy so the convoy grows and grows and grows! And then it has
to be done all over again for the return route!

Please
for the Marshall Form. You will need to print out this form and fill
it in. Click here
for sidecars, 3 wheelers and trikes entry form, again you will need
to print out and fill it in.
-
At
9.15am you will be briefed as to where you are going, sorted into
groups, taken out along the road by section marshals who know the
route. You will be dropped off at road junctions as and when marshals
are needed. All official section marshals will be wearing coloured
bibs (red, blue, green and yellow), so that they can be easily identified
and followed to the venue. A coloured spot will be placed on your
headlamp (red, blue, green or yellow) which will denote which section
of the route you will be marshalling. You will also be issued with
a high visibility yellow jacket which MUST BE WORN ON THE RIDE.
-
Your
job will be to inform motorists why they are held up and that it takes
time for the convoy to pass. Handouts are provided to help you.
-
As
a marshal your bike must be insured, taxed and have a current MOT
certificate if necessary.
-
The
convoy has a full police motorcycle escort and it must be understood
that they and NOT US have the responsibility to stop and control traffic.
-
Do
not leave your junction until the last vehicle in the convoy has passed
you. You will be told on the day what vehicle this is. There
is no rush to catch up with the convoy, all you will need to do is
move to your sector marshal who will be waiting at his or her post.
They will remain there until all the marshals for that sector are
together. It will then be the responsibility of the sector marshal
to get these marshals to the venue ( The section marshal will be familiar
with the route).
-
No one is allowed to pass the last vehicle unless authorized by the
police or the chief marshal.
-
Once
at the venue the afternoon is free for you to enjoy yourself. There
may be spare children with us who do not have anyone to look after
them. If you would like to look after a child then please contact
Pauline Priestley at the venue. If you do take a child please
do not forget to find our photographer and have your photo take with
the child. Give your convoy number to the photographer so that we
can send a copy to you.
-
At
4.00pm the convoy is lined up to start the return journey. Please
report back to the marshals briefing area no later than 3.45pm.
-
On
the return journey please marshal in the same section
(DO NOT JUST GO HOME AND LEAVE THE JOB TO SOMEONE ELSE - YOU ARE JUST
AS IMPORTANT ON THE WAY HOME).
-
Tea
and coffee will be available.
-
Finally
if you have any problems please contact an official marshal or Jumbo
Committee member who will be happy to help point you in the right
direction.
THANK
YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ATTENDING JUMBO, WITHOUT YOU THE DAY JUST WOULD NOT
HAPPEN!
